Oman today_ The UNESCO technical expert committee has provisionally approved the nomination of Italian cuisine for inclusion on the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list.
This decision follows the release of UNESCO’s technical evaluation of Italy’s nomination file, which recommended that the country’s culinary heritage be officially inscribed on the list.
The nomination was jointly submitted by Italy’s Ministry of Culture and Ministry of Agriculture.
The final decision by UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Committee is expected to be announced next month.
Francesco Lollobrigida, Italy’s Minister of Food and Agriculture, commented on the news: “It is truly gratifying to see our efforts to have Italian cuisine recognized as a global heritage receiving such attention.”
Italy has previously succeeded in registering several of its cultural arts and skills on UNESCO’s Intangible Heritage list, including Neapolitan pizza-making (2017), glass bead craftsmanship (2020), opera singing (2023), and handbell ringing (2024).
