Oman today_ The Motishwar Mandir is one of the oldest and most significant Hindu temples in Oman, located in the Muttrah area of Muscat. It was originally built between 1892 and 1909 by Indian merchants from the Bhatia community and was later renovated in 1999 to update its facilities for worshippers. The temple complex consists of three main shrines: Adi Motishwar Mahadev, Motishwar Mahadev, and Hanumanji, and features a permanent well that remains full of water even in Muscat’s arid environment.
Motishwar Mandir holds great importance for the Hindu community in Oman. Major religious festivals such as Maha Shivaratri, Vasant Panchmi, Ramnavmi, Hanuman Jayanti, and Ganesh Chaturthi are celebrated here, attracting over 20,000 visitors during these occasions. On regular days, around 400 worshippers visit the temple, while the number rises to several thousand during weekends and holidays.
The temple is situated near Al Alam Palace, and due to its historic architecture and spiritual significance, it is a key attraction not only for worshippers but also for cultural and religious tourists. In 2018, India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, visited the temple and participated in a religious ceremony, highlighting its international recognition. Motishwar Mandir stands as a symbol of Oman’s religious diversity and cultural harmony, playing a vital role in preserving Hindu heritage, fostering community gatherings, and providing visitors with a meaningful spiritual and historical experience.
