Oman today_ Wahiba Sands, also known as Sharqiya Sands, is a vast desert located in the eastern part of Oman, within the Ash Sharqiyah Governorate. It is approximately 190 kilometers from the capital, Muscat, which is about a 2 to 2.5-hour drive to the desert’s entry point. The desert covers an area of around 12,500 square kilometers, stretching roughly 180 kilometers from north to south and 80 kilometers from east to west. Its name comes from the Bedouin tribe Al Wahiba. Wahiba Sands features massive sand dunes, some of which reach impressive heights, and the southern edges of the desert are near the Arabian Sea coastline. Visiting the desert usually requires a 4×4 vehicle to fully experience the sand dunes and overnight camping. The best time to visit is between October and April, when the weather is relatively cooler. Visitors are advised to bring adequate water, fuel, and suitable desert equipment to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
