Oman today_ Telegraph Island, known in Arabic as Jazirat al Maqlab, is located in Elphinstone Inlet, part of the fjord-like waters near the town of Khasab in the Musandam Governorate, the northernmost region of Oman. The island lies less than 400 meters from the coast of the Musandam Peninsula and gets its name from a telegraph relay station built there in 1864 as part of a regional undersea telegraph cable, playing a key role in the early modern communications network. With its dramatic mountain backdrop, turquoise waters, and largely untouched landscape, Telegraph Island offers a unique experience away from typical tourist routes. Visitors can enjoy traditional dhow boat rides, swimming, and snorkeling around the island, while exploring the remnants of the old telegraph station, which provide a fascinating combination of history and natural beauty.
