Oman today_ Sab Bani Khamis is a historic and abandoned village located in the Hajar Mountains of Oman, near Jebel Shams, the highest peak in the country. In the past, it was home to around 15 families and, due to its strategic position on a cliff edge, it was well-protected from enemy attacks. Most of the village houses are built from stone and are now in ruins, though the mosque remains relatively intact. Often referred to as the “Jewel of Jebel Shams,” Sab Bani Khamis has become a popular destination for adventurous travelers.
To reach the village, visitors typically start from Al Khitaym in the Wadi An Nakhur area and follow the Balcony Walk or the W6 trail along the cliff edge toward the village. The hike takes about an hour and offers breathtaking views of Oman’s grand canyon. Along the route, remnants of terraced gardens, towers, and old houses can be seen, and at the end of the trail, a natural pool near the village provides a perfect spot to rest and enjoy the surrounding nature.
Accessing this area is recommended with a 4×4 vehicle due to rugged mountain roads, and hikers should carry safety gear such as helmets and climbing ropes for technical sections. Visiting Sab Bani Khamis offers a unique experience of Oman’s history and natural beauty, combining cultural heritage with stunning landscapes.
