Oman today_ In a quiet move, Persepolis has appointed Michael Oenning, the 59-year-old German coach, as the first assistant to Vahid Hashemian.
Born in 1965, Oenning’s playing career was spent in Germany’s lower divisions, but he quickly turned to coaching. He began his journey in academies and youth teams before stepping up to the Bundesliga. The highlight of his career came in 2008 when he led Nürnberg to promotion to Germany’s top flight. He also had a spell in charge of Hamburg.
After leaving Germany, Oenning’s path took him across Europe. He won the Hungarian Cup with Újpest and also worked in Greece and Austria, adding to his diverse coaching résumé.
For Persepolis, his arrival means not only strengthening the technical staff but also welcoming back a reputable foreign presence to the team’s bench. However, Oenning must adapt quickly to Iranian football, the intense atmosphere, and the constant pressure from fans for success.
For the supporters, the arrival of a coach with European experience brings fresh hope—a step that could mark an important move toward making the club more professional.
