Born in 1965, Oenning’s playing career was spent in Germany’s lower divisions, but he quickly turned to coaching. He began his journey in academies and youth teams before stepping up to the Bundesliga. The highlight of his career came in 2008 when he led Nürnberg to promotion to Germany’s top flight. He also had a spell in charge of Hamburg.
After leaving Germany, Oenning’s path took him across Europe. He won the Hungarian Cup with Újpest and also worked in Greece and Austria, adding to his diverse coaching résumé.
