Oman today_ The Dhofar Museum was officially inaugurated on Monday in the city of Salalah by HH Sayyid Marwan bin Turki Al Said, Governor of Dhofar. This initiative is part of efforts to reinforce Dhofar’s position as one of the key hubs of cultural and historical heritage in Oman.
Designed with a vision that goes beyond the mere display of historical artifacts, the Dhofar Museum pursues educational, research, and cultural objectives. In addition to documenting and showcasing heritage, it provides a platform for educating new generations, supporting researchers, and offering valuable resources to school and university students.
The museum’s design incorporates various aspects of the region’s history and civilization. Multiple exhibition halls are dedicated to ancient civilizations such as Samahram, Al Baleed, and Ubar, Oman’s maritime history, Islamic culture, the lifestyle of Dhofar’s people, traditional crafts, vernacular architecture, historical documents, local cuisine, traditional clothing, and other cultural elements.
Utilizing modern technologies and offering multilingual content (in Arabic, English, French, and German), the museum delivers an interactive and accessible experience for both local and international visitors. A special area has also been set aside for local artisans to display and sell their crafts—an initiative aimed at elevating their professional profile and fostering the connection between traditional culture and institutional development.
As an integrated cultural project, the Dhofar Museum is expected to play a vital role in preserving and promoting the tangible and intangible heritage of the region, establishing itself as a cornerstone of cultural tourism development in southern Oman.
