Oman today_ One of the most delicious and unique finger foods from French cuisine is the gougère — a classic bite-sized treat with a light, airy texture and a rich cheesy flavor. Gougères can be served as appetizers, snacks, or even as part of a refined pastry selection.
The following quantities serve approximately four people:
60 grams of butter, 250 milliliters of water, 1 teaspoon of salt, 180 grams of all-purpose flour, 150 grams of grated cheese, and 4 eggs.
To begin, place the butter, water, and salt in a saucepan over medium heat. Allow the mixture to come to a boil so the butter fully melts. Once it reaches a boil, immediately remove the saucepan from the heat and quickly add the flour all at once, stirring rapidly until a dough forms.
Return the pan to the heat and continue stirring the dough for a few minutes until it starts to pull away from the sides of the pan and slightly dries out. Then transfer the dough to another bowl and allow it to cool for a few minutes.
Once the dough has cooled slightly, add the 4 eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition until you achieve a smooth, cohesive mixture. Then, stir in the 150 grams of grated cheese, making sure it is evenly incorporated.
Now, using a spoon or piping bag, form small, uniform balls of dough and place them on a baking tray lined with parchment paper. Be sure to leave some space between each ball to allow for expansion during baking. You can also sprinkle a little extra cheese on top of each one, if desired.
Preheat your oven to 200°C (392°F) ahead of time to ensure the interior is fully heated. Place the tray in the oven and bake until the gougères puff up. Once they’ve risen, reduce the oven temperature slightly and continue baking until their tops are golden brown.
For added flavor, you can also mix a bit of sesame seeds or dried herbs such as thyme or parsley into the dough before baking.
Finally, gougères can be served as appetizers, snacks, or even as savory pastries for more elegant occasions. With the right ingredients and attention to detail, these delightful French finger foods will add a sophisticated touch to your gatherings and impress your guests with both taste and presentation.
