Oman today_ The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism has completed the restoration of two historic towers in Murir village in the Wilayat of Shinas. This initiative is part of ongoing efforts to preserve Oman’s architectural and cultural heritage.
The project, supervised by the Department of Heritage and Tourism in North Batinah, focused on the conservation of the Al Murir and Al Muraba’a towers. Both towers are situated in an area of historical significance, rich with archaeological sites.
Hassan bin Sulaiman al Jabri, Director of the Department, stated that the restoration was carried out in collaboration with the local community. The ministry provided essential building materials, such as mortar, along with technical supervision.
The Al Muraba’a Tower is a square-shaped structure measuring 4.5 meters in length, 3.3 meters in width, and approximately 7 meters in height. It is located on an elevated hill, with a flowing wadi to its south. Built using mud and stones, the tower features several access routes and openings.
In contrast, the Al Murir Tower is a circular structure with a diameter of 6 meters and a height of 10 meters. Constructed with mud and gravel, it includes strategically positioned openings.
The Wilayat of Shinas boasts 35 historic towers and several prominent forts, including Shinas Castle, Khadrawin Fort, Ajib Fort, Al Aswad Fort, and Al Asrar Fort. Among these, the Al Murir Tower stands out due to its location along the coastline, while Al Aswad Fort is recognized as one of the most significant heritage sites in the region.
This project is part of the ministry’s broader strategy to safeguard archaeological landmarks and enhance public awareness of their historical and cultural value. The ministry underscores the importance of these efforts to ensure that such heritage remains accessible to future generations.
