Oman today_ The list of nominees for the 2025 Gotham Film Awards has been announced, with Paul Thomas Anderson’s big-budget drama One Battle After Another emerging as the frontrunner with six nominations. The film, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, is competing in major categories including Best Feature, Outstanding Performance (for Benicio del Toro and Teyana Taylor), and Breakthrough Performer (for Chase Infinity).
Two years ago, Gotham organizers lifted the budget cap that had previously restricted eligibility to films made for under $35 million. During that earlier era, films such as Spotlight (2015), Moonlight (2016), and Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022) won Best Feature at the Gothams before going on to Oscar success.
The removal of the cap in 2024 had little effect, with Barbie—featuring Ryan Gosling—being the only high-budget nominee that year. This year, however, the dominance of Anderson’s $130 million production marks a significant shift in the awards’ landscape.
In the Best Feature category, One Battle After Another faces competition from Bugonia, East of Wall, Familiar Touch, Hamnet, If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, Lurker, Sorry, Baby, The Testament of Ann Lee, and Train Dreams.
It Was Just an Accident, directed by Jafar Panahi, which won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival and represents France in the upcoming Oscars, has been nominated in the categories of Best Director and Best International Feature.
For the fourth consecutive year, the Gotham Awards’ acting categories remain gender-neutral, with performers of all genders competing together. Among the prominent nominees are Jessie Buckley for Hamnet and Ethan Hawke for Blue Moon.
The Norwegian film Sentimental Value, Norway’s official Oscar entry, did not receive a Best Feature nomination, though its stars Enja Ibsdotter Lydias and Stellan Skarsgård earned nods in the Outstanding Supporting Performance category.
The 2025 Gotham Awards ceremony will be held on December 1, 2025, in New York City.
