Oman today_ The Central Bank of Oman has unveiled two commemorative coins in gold and silver to mark the 280th anniversary of the founding of the Al Busaid dynasty (1744–2024).
This occasion symbolizes the enduring political stability and wise leadership of the Al Busaid family throughout Oman’s history, as well as their pivotal role in laying the foundations of the modern state and driving national development.
The design of the coins reflects Oman’s rich cultural heritage and national identity. The obverse side features a coloured image of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, along with His Majesty’s tughra (royal emblem), Al Alam Palace, and the historic Jalali and Mirani Forts. The reverse side depicts colourful illustrations of Sohar Fort, a traditional Omani dhow, and the names of the imams and sultans of the Al Busaid dynasty, all rendered with fine detail.
According to the Central Bank, only 15 gold coins and 1,000 silver coins have been minted, each carrying a face value of one Omani rial. The gold coin has a purity of 0.927, while the silver coin has a purity of 0.999. Both coins measure 75 millimetres in diameter and weigh 113.4 grams. The initial selling price is set at RO 7,935 for the gold coin and RO 134 for the silver coin, subject to changes in international gold and silver prices.
The commemorative coins are considered legal tender at their face value and will be available for purchase from October 12 at CBO branches in Ruwi, Salalah, and Sohar, as well as through Oman Post’s sales outlet at the Royal Opera House Galleria.
