Oman today_ At the 2025 World Wrestling Championships in Zagreb, Iran’s freestyle wrestling team, featuring a mix of rising talents and seasoned athletes, ended a 12-year drought to reclaim the world title. In the early rounds, Iran took the lead over its main rivals with Amirhossein Zare’s gold, Ahmad Javan’s silver, and Kamran Ghasempour’s bronze. The triumph was later secured with standout performances from Rahman Amouzad and Amirali Azarpira.
By the close of the tournament, Iran had collected 7 medals: silver for Ahmad Javan; bronzes for Mohammad Nokhodii, Kamran Ghasempour, and Amirhossein Firoozpour; gold for Amirhossein Zare; along with guaranteed medals for Rahman Amouzad and Amirali Azarpira, both of whom reached the finals. This achievement makes Iran the record holder for the most medals in freestyle wrestling at a single World Championships.
In the team standings, Iran topped the table with 100 points, followed by the United States with 94 and Azerbaijan with 83. Even under the most optimistic scenario for the U.S., surpassing Iran proved impossible. This marks Iran’s first world freestyle wrestling title since 2013 and the first under the leadership of Alireza Dabir. Analysts note that even if Russia had been present, Iran would still have been the favorite to claim the crown.
