Oman today_ Kristen Stewart, with her first feature-length directorial effort, The Chronology of Water, won the Revelation Award at the Deauville Film Festival in France. The jury for this edition of the festival was chaired by Golshifteh Farahani.
Stewart, best known for the Twilight series, explained upon receiving the award that the production of the film took nearly eight years:
“For me, simply being able to complete this film was reward enough. Many young filmmakers feel they are facing an impossible task, but for me, this journey was more than just professional—it was deeply personal; not just as ‘Kristen,’ but as a girl.”
The film follows Lydia (played by Imogen Poots), a young woman who discovers her identity through writing, finds peace and redemption through swimming, and ultimately becomes a capable mother, an influential teacher, and a modern writer. Other cast members include Thora Birch, Earl Qu, Michael App, Suzanne Flade, Kim Gurn, and Jim Blushi. The screenplay, based on the memoirs of Lydia Yuknavitch, was co-written by Andy Mingo and Stewart herself.
Stewart further emphasized:
“I know the form and subject of the film mattered, but for me, it was about creating a work about pain, bleeding, and the struggle to find a voice in a world carefully designed to silence us. This process took eight damn years.”
The Chronology of Water premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. At this year’s Deauville Festival, Zoey Deutch was also honored as Hollywood’s Rising Star.
