Oman today_ Wakan Village is one of Oman’s lesser-known destinations, located in the Western Hajar Mountains within the Wilayah of Nakhal, about 140 kilometers from Muscat. Perched at an altitude of roughly 1,500 meters above sea level, it enjoys a cooler climate compared to most parts of the country. Access is through Wadi Mistal, and reaching the village typically requires a 4×4 vehicle.
What makes Wakan special are its lush terraced gardens, irrigated by a traditional falaj system. These terraces produce pomegranates, apricots, grapes, figs, and walnuts, creating a unique green landscape amid the rugged mountains. In spring, especially between February and March, the village is transformed by apricot blossoms that paint the valley in vibrant colors. A scenic walking trail of about 700 steps winds through the orchards and irrigation channels, eventually leading to observation towers that offer sweeping views of the mountains and valleys below.
Wakan is ideal for visitors who enjoy light hiking, nature exploration, and authentic rural culture. The best time to visit is during winter and early spring, when the weather is pleasant and the gardens are at their most beautiful. Still relatively untouched by mass tourism, the village provides a serene and genuine experience of Oman’s natural and cultural heritage.
