Oman today_ Ian McKellen has confirmed the return of Frodo in the prequel film The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. Directed by Andy Serkis, the film takes place before Frodo’s journey to Rivendell and during the timeline of The Fellowship of the Ring, focusing on a mission in which Gandalf tasks Aragorn with tracking down Gollum.
McKellen, who played Gandalf in the original trilogy, announced on Sunday at the “Fantasy Love” event in London that filming for the project will begin in May. In the presence of Elijah Wood, he added, “I can share two secrets about the cast: Frodo and Gandalf will appear in the film.”
Many of the main cast members from Peter Jackson’s trilogy, including Viggo Mortensen, Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, and Orlando Bloom, are expected to return for The Hunt for Gollum. Bloom previously confirmed that Serkis plans to use artificial intelligence to reduce the actors’ ages by 20 years or more.
The project, which faced a one-year delay a few months ago, is now scheduled for release in December 2027.
