Oman today_ The East Asian Football Federation is preparing to submit an official proposal to host the 2046 FIFA World Cup through a joint bid involving several countries in the region. The initiative is expected to include Japan, South Korea, China, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, and Australia as potential co-hosts.
Due to FIFA’s rotation policy for World Cup hosting, Asian nations are not eligible to host the tournament before 2046, as Saudi Arabia has already been awarded the 2034 edition. Therefore, 2046 represents the earliest opportunity for countries in the region to submit a bid.
Representatives from the East Asian and ASEAN football federations have already expressed their support for the plan during a meeting held in Tokyo. Although no formal agreement has been signed yet, discussions to form a unified and collaborative proposal are ongoing. According to the President of the Japan Football Association, the idea of cooperation between the two federations is being seriously explored.
Under FIFA regulations, any host country must provide at least 14 stadiums with a seating capacity of over 40,000. Additionally, venues for the semi-finals must accommodate more than 60,000 spectators, while the final stadium must hold over 80,000.
If this joint bid comes to fruition, Asia could once again host the world’s largest football tournament—this time through regional collaboration on an unprecedented scale.
