Oman today_ The Oman Kite Festival launched in the Bar Al Hikman region, where the skies came alive with vibrant colors and the movement of kites.
This high-energy event, considered one of the largest celebrations of sport, sustainability, and community along Oman’s coastline, has already captured the attention of numerous enthusiasts.
At the opening ceremony, Dr. Hashil Al Mahrouqi, CEO of Omran Group, welcomed athletes, spectators, and community members, setting a dynamic tone for what promises to be one of Oman’s most engaging watersports events.
Organized by Oman Sail with the support of Omran Group, the festival runs from July 14 to 24, bringing together local and international kitesurfers. The competition route spans Oman’s eastern coastline—from Bar Al Hikman and Al Ashkharah to Masirah Island and Ras Al Hadd.
According to the organizers, the festival aims to go beyond just competitions. Key highlights include the Kite Course Race in Bar Al Hikman (July 15), the thrilling multi-stage Downwinder Race (July 16, 20, and 21), Big Air and Freestyle Shows on Masirah Island (July 17–18), the Coastal Race in Ras Masirah (July 19), and the grand finale Slalom Race at Ras Al Hadd Lake (July 24).
Khalfan Al Athubi, an Omani participant, said the challenge goes beyond racing. “This is a completely new experience for me. I’ve never done long-distance kiting before—not even in training—so I’m very excited to see how far I can go,” he shared.
In addition to the sporting elements, the festival is designed to promote sustainability, tourism, and youth engagement, aligning with Oman Vision 2040. Activities such as community beach clean-ups, a small business exhibition at Al Ashkharah Park, and local artisan markets add environmental and cultural depth to the event.
Senior leaders from Omran and Oman Sail were also present at the opening ceremony, emphasizing the festival’s significance as an opportunity to showcase Oman’s tourism potential, support local talent, and elevate the country’s profile in the global watersports scene.
