Oman today_ On the opening day of Paris Haute Couture Week, Iris van Herpen made a striking and distinctive impression with a collection inspired by the depths of the ocean.
At the heart of the collection was an extraordinary dress created using 125 million living cells of Pyrocystis lunula, a bioluminescent algae. These algae were cultivated in a special nutrient-rich gel and housed within chambers integrated into the structure of the dress. The filaments running through the garment serve as vessels that hold the gel and the living organisms.
The dress responds to body heat and movement, causing the algae to emit light in real time as the model moves, producing a mesmerizing display of living bioluminescence.
This creation showcased a powerful fusion of art, science, and technology, pushing the boundaries of what fashion can be.
