Oman today_ Mwasalat has announced that Muscat Metro and water taxi projects will commence by 2026. These initiatives are part of the 2015-2040 transport strategy, aimed at improving public transportation, reducing traffic congestion, and promoting sustainable urban development.
In earlier phases, the program focused on expanding bus routes and enhancing infrastructure. The third phase (2026-2040) will introduce the metro or light rail system and water taxis. The goal is to transport 1 million passengers daily by 2040 and achieve carbon neutrality.
Key challenges include delays in developing Muscat’s main transport hub, the lack of dedicated bus lanes, and traffic signal issues.
