Oman today_ The Royal Oman Police have installed new AI-powered cameras on Oman’s roads capable of identifying traffic violations, including mobile phone use while driving. These systems, equipped with control cameras, can detect and record phone-related violations, aiming to warn drivers about the dangers of distracted driving, such as delayed reaction times and an increased risk of accidents.
These cameras not only identify violations but also help monitor traffic flow, pinpoint congestion areas, and track wanted vehicles. Reports indicate that mobile phone use while driving is one of the leading causes of road accidents, and this initiative aims to reduce accidents and improve road safety.
Additionally, penalties for traffic violations have been significantly increased. The current minimum penalties include imprisonment ranging from 10 days to 2 years and fines between 200 and 3,000 Omani Rials. According to recent statistics, road accidents in Oman continue to rise, with 595 fatalities recorded in 2023 and a total of 2,040 traffic incidents reported.
