Oman today_ Six adult actors for the beloved “Harry Potter” series have been officially revealed. HBO has announced the names of four main cast members and two guest stars for the series.
In this new television adaptation, John Lithgow, an Olivier Award winner, will portray Albus Dumbledore. Janet McTeer, an Academy Award-nominated actress, is set to play Minerva McGonagall. Paapa Essiedu, known for his role in I May Destroy You, will take on the role of Severus Snape. Additionally, Nick Frost, famed for his work in comedies such as Shaun of the Dead, will star as Rubeus Hagrid.
Two guest actors have also been cast for the first season. Luke Treadaway, known for his work in the stage production of Hamlet, will play Quirinus Quirrell, the Defense Against the Dark Arts professor. Meanwhile, Paul Whitehouse, a five-time BAFTA winner, will appear as Argus Filch, the caretaker of Hogwarts.
The series is being written and showrun by Francesca Gardiner, with Mark Mylod serving as director. It is expected to run for over a decade. Casey Bloys, HBO’s executive, has emphasized that this adaptation will remain entirely faithful to the source material, with J.K. Rowling overseeing the project directly.
John Lithgow shared his thoughts on the project in an interview: “The offer was completely unexpected. I was at the Sundance Film Festival when I was contacted about this role. It wasn’t an easy decision, but I believe this character will define a significant chapter of my career, and I’m thrilled about it.”
The actors for the roles of Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley have yet to be announced. The series is scheduled to premiere on HBO in late 2026 or early 2027.
