Oman today_ Sheikh Salman, the President of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), has strongly opposed the idea of increasing the number of teams in the 2030 FIFA World Cup to 64, calling it illogical. This stance comes in response to a proposal from the South American Football Confederation, which suggested doubling the number of participating teams in the tournament.
The World Cup has already been expanded from 32 to 48 teams for the 2026 edition, but Sheikh Salman has warned that further increases could lead to chaos and serious challenges. According to reports, the AFC and the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) are among the primary opponents of this proposal.
