Oman today_ This year, the Cannes Film Festival has decided to award Robert De Niro, the legendary actor, the honorary Palme d’Or. The award will be presented to him at the opening ceremony, which will take place on May 13.
De Niro, who previously served as the president of the Cannes jury in 2011, has been a prominent figure at the festival with iconic works such as Taxi Driver and King of Comedy. Additionally, he traveled to Cannes in 2021 for the premiere of Killers of the Flower Moon, directed by Martin Scorsese.
In the official statement from the festival, De Niro is described as one of the symbols of cinema, a figure whose unique and profound acting style has earned worldwide acclaim. The festival describes him as a cinematic legend who has elevated the seventh art to new heights with subtle details like a smile or a meaningful glance.
In response to this honor, De Niro said, “I have always felt a special connection to the Cannes Festival. In a world that often separates us, Cannes remains a place that brings together storytellers, filmmakers, and cinema lovers. It feels like coming home to me.”
After receiving the award, the actor will meet festival-goers in a special masterclass. Last year, Meryl Streep and George Lucas were the recipients of this honorary award.
The list of films selected for the 78th edition of the Cannes Film Festival will be announced on April 10. The festival will run from May 13 to May 24.
