Oman today_ The Gate of Hell, also known as the “Door to Hell,” is a fiery pit located in the Karakum Desert in the Ahal region of Turkmenistan. This natural phenomenon is about 70 meters in diameter and approximately 30 meters deep, and it has been continuously burning since 1971.
The history of this pit dates back to 1971, when a group of Soviet geologists was drilling to explore natural gas reserves. During the drilling process, the rig encountered a natural gas cavern, causing the ground to collapse and creating a large crater. To prevent the release of toxic gases into the atmosphere, it was decided to set the pit on fire, with the hope that the flames would extinguish within a few weeks. However, the fire has been burning ever since.
The Gate of Hell has become a unique tourist attraction, drawing many visitors. Tourists can witness the fiery flames and glowing lights of the pit up close, especially at night when it creates a stunning spectacle.
Despite its natural beauty, the Gate of Hell remains a potential danger due to the toxic gases and extreme heat it emits. Therefore, visitors must approach the site with great caution and follow safety guidelines when visiting.
