SINGAPOREAN singer JJ Lin was unfazed following news that he lost more than US$113,000 (RM497,539) in the metaverse property market and he even made a joke at his own expense
The 42-year-old, whose investments in virtual property on Decentraland lost 91% of its value, posted a photo of an empty wallet on Weibo, China’s equivalent of Twitter.
“I hear that many people are offering to help me manage my finances,” he quipped.
The singer became a trending topic on Chinese cyberspace after news on the three plots of virtual land he bought in 2022 for US$123,000 (RM541,569) was now only worth US$10,000 (RM44,030).
Lin also became a subject of online vitriol as he was deemed to be encouraging Internet users to join him in November last year.
Netizens who suffered financial losses investing in virtual properties blamed the singer for promoting a commodity which had its value propped up by a speculative craze.
“JJ Lin is a superstar and is rich. He can afford to lose the money. For normal people like us, we are left with nothing!” one netizen wrote.
However, fans of Lin were quick to defend the singer and told detractors to take responsibility for speculating on virtual properties.
